Gajendra represents the King of Indriyas our senses. In the previous birth as Indradyumna, a great King due to his arrogance he did not respect the Sage Agasthya. So the arrogance made him to take another birth as Gajendra.

From the story it is clear Gajendra leads a luxurious life, all powerful, with lots of praise from his fellow herds. But he could not extricate himself from the clutches of Makara crocodile while taking bath along with his herd members. All the members leave him alone to his fate to death, when upon his prayer from the core of his heart Lord Krishna appears to grants him Moksha Nirvana.
So, not only he sheds his arrogance, he understands that he is alone, despite his powers, and only Narayana can rescue him from the clutches of this world of make belief.

While Gajendra can be compared to as each one of us, the Makara is sins, and the lake is the world in which we live. So if we are constantly and sincerely think of Lord Vishnu, not only we become liberated souls, our senses will be under control, no bad deeds and bad thoughts influence us, and the world will be a better place to live in.
